For the new year

All for One

We are all here for one reason…Our children

All for One is a play group/support group for children with special needs and their families.

There is organized play, snacks, and entertainment provided by specially trained care givers.  Our children are building life long friendships in a fun, safe environment.

While our children are making new friends so are we. We have the chance to talk with other parents and professionals who understand the unique challenges that have become a part of our every day life.

We will have three speakers for the evening to take us from birth to adult hood.  Helping us develop a road map of what support is available and when and where to find it.

Shannon Morgan, of Birth to Three, will be our first speaker of the evening.

Sharon Stephan, Title 19 Waiver Educator, for Westbrook Health will be our second speaker.

With Molly Fiebler, Family Support Coordinator, with Westbrook, will tie everything together.

Dr Gary Nelson is the author of A Relentless Hope Surviving the Storm of Teen Depression.  The inspiration for this book came partly from his own experience with his son, Ton Nelson.

Dr Nelson received his Doctorate from Boston University in Pastoral Counseling.  Besides being an author, and counselor, he is also the pastor of Sand Hill United Methodist Church just out side of Boaz WV.

We are more then blessed to have Dr Nelson as our guest speaker.  If your child is not yet suffering from depression, statistically if they have a disability they will at some point in there life.  Be prepared before you are faced with this devastating life changing illness.

Our March 2nd meeting

Our March 2nd meeting

Our meeting on March 2, 2010 was out standing! We had two guest speakers, Dianna Bailey-Miller, Parent Coordinator/Advocate Region 1 of FAST – LAWV, and Tina Hatfield autism teacher at Martin Elementary School.

We found out that we, as parents, have eight days to change our child’s IEP, and you should receive a copy of the IEP before you leave the day of the meeting.  Take it home and spend some time looking over it.  If you have any questions, call your child’s teacher right away.  If you want to make a change, another meeting will be planned to establish a new IEP.  If some time has elapsed, and it is a small change, they may be able to make an amendment rather then having a full IEP.

You can request an IEP at any time.  You do not have to wait until the end of the year.  You should first let your wishes be known to your child’s teacher.  If your child has not yet been tested, you will need to send a request in writing to the special education office.

A Section 504 is part of the “Americans with Disabilities Act”, it is less rigidly governed and can be applied for college, or a work situation for adults.  It can be hand written on a plain sheet of paper, and does not require testing, or a full meeting with school officials.

We requested 504’s for most of our foster children, so they would be allowed some leniencies during the transition time.

I knew that FAST helped with IEP’s, they helped us with our son’s, but I had no idea that they did so much more.  FAST stands for Family, Advocacy, Support, and Training, which is a division of Legal Aid.

Some of the issues they will help you with are;

Legal Issues                    Educational

Social Security                Multidisciplinary

Child Support                 Clinical Review

Child Custody                Treatment Planning

Adoption

All who attended the meeting were given a bag of items containing;

 Marbles…For when you lose yours

o        Clear- so you may see things clearly.

o        Green- spring is on its way.

o        Blue- all your skies may be blue.

  Spike…John 19:30 “…It is Finished.”

                    No matter what you are going through,

       God has already worked it out.  It is finished.

  Sunflower Seeds…With every challenge there is growth.

                                 The sun will shine again.
